Removals in Plymouth.
The busiest place we work. A naval city with a big rental market, a university, and housing that runs from Victorian conversions on the Hoe to post-war semis out at Plympton — all of which move differently.
Plymouth generates more moves per head than anywhere else in Devon and it is not close. Service postings come and go on fixed dates. Students arrive and leave in waves. The rental stock in the middle of the city turns over constantly. That means a lot of small, quick, awkward jobs rather than a steady diet of four-bed houses.
Neighbourhood by neighbourhood
The Hoe, the Barbican and the city centre
Tall Victorian conversions and apartment blocks. The stairwells are the problem — half landings with a tight turn where a three-seater has to go up on its end, and sometimes does not go at all. The Barbican adds cobbles and streets built before vans. We check parking restrictions per street and arrange a bay suspension where it is needed rather than circling hopefully.
Mutley, Greenbank and Peverell
Student and young-professional territory. Terraces, permit parking, no loading bays, and a hallway width that decides whether the sofa goes through the door or the window. In late June and September half the street is moving at once and the road fills with hired vans, so we start early.
Devonport, Stoke and Keyham
Naval housing and older terraces, with the dockyard shaping the traffic. Moves here are often tied to a posting date that cannot slip, so the planning matters more than the distance does.
Plympton, Plymstock and Derriford
Where it gets easy. Post-war and modern housing, driveways, somewhere to put the lorry, and family moves rather than single rooms. Derriford has the hospital traffic to work around and not much else.
Moving into or out of the city
Plenty of what we do in Plymouth is not a Plymouth move at all — it is someone leaving for the Midlands, London or the North, or arriving from them. Plymouth questions
Can you park on the Hoe or in the Barbican?
Sometimes, and rarely for as long as we would like. Both are restricted and the Barbican streets are narrow enough that a Luton blocks them entirely. We check the restrictions for your street before the day and arrange a suspension where one is needed.
Do you do the student moves around Mutley and Greenbank?
Every year, and the crush is September and late June. Permit parking, terraced houses with narrow hallways and six people all moving the same weekend. Book well ahead of the tenancy date if you can.
Is a naval posting move different?
Logistically it is a long-distance move with a hard date attached, and the date is the part that matters. Tell us the deadline at enquiry and we will build the plan backwards from it.
Our flat has a lift. Does that make it easy?
It helps enormously, right up until it is out of service on the day. We always ask for the stair route as a fallback and size the crew so a broken lift is an inconvenience rather than a cancellation.
